The meeting was attended by Park Namchun, Mayor of Incheon; Lee Kangho, Mayor of Namdong District; Yoon Jungmok, Head of the Incheon Headquarters of the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation; Hyun Unmong, Director of the Namdong Smart Green Industrial Complex Project Group; Seo Byungjo, Director of Incheon Technopark; Professor Shin Ilgi of Incheon Catholic University; and Park Jungwoo, CEO of Manongtanto Co., Ltd.
The Environmental Design Center of Incheon Technopark explained the overall business promotion strategy, including the creation of consumer goods brand experience spaces connecting beauty, cosmetics, and consumer product companies, the establishment of various cultural experience spaces for citizens in areas with high foot traffic, and the creation of ecological cultural experience spaces.
In particular, they analyzed domestic and international cases of similar industrial complexes and decided to prepare detailed plans for the creation of a complex cultural, artistic, and shopping space utilizing Seunggi Neighborhood Park, the Human Resources Development Institute, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Incheon Regional Small and Medium Venture Business Administration site; the development of an ecological exploration trail around Namdong No. 1 Retention Pond; and the establishment of an industrial history museum using Namdong No. 2 Retention Pond.
The Incheon Industrial Complex Industrial Cultural Space Grand Renovation Project aims for the vision of "a business space by day, an industrial cultural space by night," seeking to improve the negative image and working conditions of aging industrial complexes and to transform them into citizen-participatory cultural, artistic consumption spaces and industrial spaces that leverage the characteristics of industrial complexes adjacent to large residential areas.
Namdong National Industrial Complex, the center of economic development in the metropolitan area and Incheon, houses about 7,000 companies, accounting for 27% of Incheon’s manufacturing facilities, providing jobs for approximately 100,000 people.
However, Namdong National Industrial Complex, which was established on the outskirts of the city in the 1980s, has recently become located within the city due to urban expansion and the development of Songdo International City, causing disharmony with surrounding areas. It faces many problems such as lack of infrastructure including parks, green spaces, and parking lots, and the spread of a negative image due to aging, leading to young workers avoiding employment there.
Accordingly, Incheon City plans to develop Namdong National Industrial Complex not only as a production base but also as a space where local residents, workers, and all citizens can enjoy consumption, leisure, and culture together through the industrial cultural space grand renovation project.
