[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Kang Ki-yoon, a member of the People Power Party, revealed that over the past two years, there have been 142,700 applications for relief from voice and messenger phishing damages, with the total damage amount reaching 1.116 trillion KRW.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service, the number of applications for relief from voice and messenger phishing damages over the past two years was 70,218 cases in 2018 and 72,488 cases in 2019, totaling 142,700 cases.
The damage amount was 444 billion KRW in 2018 and 672 billion KRW in 2019, totaling 1.116 trillion KRW.
By damage type, as of 2019, the damage amounts increased to 221.4 billion KRW for government agency impersonation, 34.2 billion KRW for messenger phishing, and 450.6 billion KRW for loan fraud.
Additionally, extracting the top five individuals by relief application amount, the largest damage was 1.26 billion KRW for first place, joint second place was 1.1 billion KRW for two people, fourth place was 1.07 billion KRW, and fifth place was 940 million KRW, all of which were fraud damages impersonating public institutions.
In response, Representative Kang said, "Voice and messenger phishing have long been cited as serious crimes, but the scale of damage is still very extensive, and cases of suicide are occurring one after another."

He added, "All related agencies such as the National Intelligence Service, Ministry of Science and ICT, Financial Supervisory Service, and National Police Agency must join forces and actively work on fundamental countermeasures."
