For now, monitoring the situation... President Moon's 'Byeon Chang-heum Dilemma'
Yeo Leadership's Proposal to Dismiss at Blue House Meeting? "Not True"... Minister Byeon Chang-heum's Position Linked to 'Political Frame'
[Asia Economy Reporters Ryu Jeong-min and Lee Ji-eun] As voices demanding the dismissal of Byun Chang-heum, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, grow louder in the political sphere, attention has turned to whether President Moon Jae-in will make a decisive move. However, the decision regarding Minister Byun's position may not be easy, as it is linked to the political framing of whether the 'Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) land speculation allegations' constitute a failure of the current administration or not.
President Moon had assigned Minister Byun the task of participating in a strict investigation at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. This reflects an intention to proceed with the investigation first and then make a judgment based on the results, rather than a punitive dismissal.
The problem is that even after President Moon's intentions were conveyed, calls for resignation have been raised not only by the opposition but also within the ruling party. Park Soo-hyun, the Democratic Party's Public Relations and Communication Committee Chair, stated, "Minister Byun should take responsibility and resign." Although this message does not necessarily reflect the ruling party leadership's stance, it is a statement that could amplify the controversy.
On the morning of the 10th, there were even speculations that the ruling party's demand for dismissal would be conveyed during a meeting between President Moon and the Democratic Party floor leaders. However, Choi In-ho, the Democratic Party's chief spokesperson, said, "Reports that the Democratic Party leadership plans to request the president to dismiss Minister Byun are not true."
At a time when it is necessary to determine whether the LH incident stems from chronic corruption or power-related corruption, if the dismissal debate spreads, it could create a 'stigma effect' on the current administration, which seems to be an attempt to preemptively block this. If the equation 'Minister Byun's dismissal = Moon Jae-in government's corruption' is formed, it means the political responsibility must be fully borne.
For now, the ruling party has put the brakes on the dismissal debate, but the situation remains tense with ongoing controversies over 'misstatements.' In response to a question from Kim Eun-hye, a People Power Party lawmaker, during the full session of the National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee the previous day, asking whether Minister Byun genuinely believed that LH employees invested without knowing about public land development, he replied, "Based on my experience, yes." This attitude from Minister Byun, who previously served as LH president, is fueling public criticism.
Meanwhile, the ruling party struggled to manage the fallout from the controversy surrounding the cancellation of the 3rd New Town projects. On the 9th, a radio interview statement by Hong Ik-pyo, the Democratic Party's Policy Committee Chair, sparked rumors about the cancellation of the 3rd New Town projects, causing residents in affected areas such as Goyang, Namyangju, and Hanam in Gyeonggi Province to inquire locally about real estate, creating a commotion.
