Samsung Electronics Launches High-Performance SSD Without DRAM: "Reducing Costs While Maintaining Performance"
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Samsung Electronics announced on the 10th that it has launched a new SSD product, the 'NVMe SSD 980,' which satisfies both performance and price, leading the popularization of high-performance SSDs.
This product applies the 'HMB (Host Memory Buffer)' technology, which eliminates the DRAM embedded inside the SSD through technical optimization and directly connects to the DRAM installed in the PC. By removing the DRAM embedded inside the SSD, costs are reduced while maintaining performance.
Additionally, based on a high-performance NVMe interface, it can achieve up to 6 times faster sequential read speeds compared to previous models, providing the best performance not only for laptop users but also for the growing number of content creators, home gamers, and various other consumer groups.
Equipped with the latest 6th generation V-NAND, it offers sequential read/write speeds of up to 3500MB/s and 3000MB/s, and random read/write performance of 500K IOPS and 480K IOPS, respectively. The 'Intelligent TurboWrite' feature, which optimizes performance according to the user's workload, has also been improved to provide more stable performance.
This new SSD product incorporates high-spec thermal control technologies such as overheating prevention functions mainly found in high-end products, a nickel-coated controller, and a heat dissipation sheet on the back of the product. Through this, users are expected to experience optimal performance for extended periods. Furthermore, this new product improves power efficiency by up to 56% compared to the previous model '970 EVO' and minimizes carbon emissions during the manufacturing process.
Samsung Electronics' 'NVMe SSD 980' will be released in more than 40 countries worldwide, including Korea, the United States, Germany, and China, in three models: 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB, priced at $49.99, $69.99, and $129.99, respectively.
