[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] SK Telecom is supporting artists who are struggling due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

On the 7th, SK Telecom announced that it will exhibit artworks by artists using the media walls at its headquarters in Euljiro, Jung-gu, Seoul, and its Dunsan office on Munjeong-ro, Seo-gu, Daejeon.

This month, a total of 16 works by Yang Si-young (22, Level 2 developmental disability), an artist affiliated with the social enterprise ‘Thisabled’ that supports the activities of artists with developmental disabilities, will be reborn as media art and exhibited. Yang expresses various subjects using traditional Korean painting pigments on thin Korean paper (hwaseonji).

SK Telecom produces artworks in the form of media art by adding animation and music so that visitors can experience paintings, performance art, and other diverse forms of art more vividly, and exhibits them on media walls installed inside and outside the office buildings.

The exhibition runs year-round daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. with no separate admission fee. However, depending on the social distancing level, visitors’ entry to the office buildings may be restricted, allowing only viewing of the external media walls.

The artworks are selected monthly, mainly from emerging artists, artists with developmental disabilities, and artists affiliated with social enterprises, recommended by social enterprises in the art field. From the end of this month, the exhibited media art will be provided as ‘V Coloring’ content for general customers to download, with all proceeds going to the artists.

This project was planned to provide opportunities for promotion and revenue generation for artists whose exhibition opportunities have decreased due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. It also signifies adding ESG (Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance) values to everyday spaces.

Song Kwang-hyun, head of SK Telecom’s Digital Communication Office, said, “We want to convey support to artists and visitors exhausted by COVID-19 by exhibiting various works themed on warmth and happiness,” and added, “We will continue to add ESG values to diverse communication activities.”
