[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Artificial intelligence (AI) specialists are demonstrating the power of networking and strengthening their capabilities.

Dong-Eui University (President Han Su-hwan) Artificial Intelligence Grand ICT Research Center (Director Jeong Seok-chan) held the ‘2021 Graduate School AI Department (Head Professor Kim Seong-hee) Working Professionals Networking’ event at 5 p.m. on March 4 at La Bella Citta Cheongsapo Branch.

About 60 people attended the event, including 20 new students of the IT Convergence Department AI major working professional (master’s) course, 5 new doctoral students of the AI Department, about 20 master’s students, Director Jeong Seok-chan of the AI Grand ICT Research Center, Professors Kim Seong-hee, Kim Jun-seok, and Kwon Soon-gak of the AI Department.

The attendees shared useful and diverse information about the academic schedule and graduate school life, and encouraged each other’s first steps as AI experts through meetings with professors and peers before the semester began.

Dong-Eui University’s AI Grand ICT Research Center was selected for the ‘Grand ICT Research Center Competition Project’ announced by the Ministry of Science and ICT, and since July 1 last year, it has been laying the foundation for the ‘AI Future City Busan’ by developing AI-based intelligent innovation convergence technologies based on the demand of the Busan regional industry and fostering specialized personnel.

A total project budget of 18.75 billion KRW will be invested until 2027, including 15 billion KRW from the national government, 1.5 billion KRW from the city government, and 2.25 billion KRW from Dong-Eui University.

Director Jeong Seok-chan of the AI Grand ICT Research Center said, “The two major pillars of the project are fostering AI-related specialized personnel and R&D in collaboration with local companies. Through this, we aim to nurture strategic industries in the Busan region and secure new growth engines.”

He added, “We newly established a Master of Engineering degree program in the AI major field at Dong-Eui University’s general graduate school to train creative practical experts who can lead AI technology and existing industrial innovation, targeting working professionals in Busan’s IT and software companies.”

Since last year, Dong-Eui University has been operating a working professional master’s course (20 students). In the second year of the project this year, a doctoral course for working professionals in the AI major was established and new students were recruited.

This year, 5 doctoral students and 22 master’s students were finally selected. By the time the project is completed in 2027, it is expected that at least 200 AI experts will be secured in the region to contribute to regional development.

Tuition support covers 90% for employees of small and medium-sized enterprises and 80% for employees of medium-sized enterprises each semester. Considering students’ accessibility to the field, a Centum campus has been established and operated at the Busan Information Industry Promotion Agency located in the Centum area, where ICT companies are concentrated.

This creates opportunities to build networks with companies, assist promising local small and medium ICT companies, and collaborate on development.
