Gurye-gun to Provide Treatment Improvement Allowance for Caregivers at Long-term Care Institutions
Monthly Allowance of 30,000 KRW Paid to Home Care Workers at Local Long-Term Care Institutions
Improving Long-Term Care Service Quality Through Better Treatment of Care Workers
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yuk Mi-seok] Gurye-gun announced on the 5th that it has newly provided a monthly allowance of 30,000 KRW since January this year to improve the poor treatment of care workers who have played a fundamental role in elderly care.
In December, the county enacted the "Ordinance on the Improvement of Treatment and Status of Care Workers in Gurye-gun," establishing necessary measures to improve the treatment and status of workers employed at long-term care institutions located in Gurye-gun. This step aims to protect their rights and further enhance the quality of long-term care services.
The allowance recipients are care workers who have worked for more than one year and over 60 hours at long-term care institutions within the county. According to the ordinance, the county secured 75.6 million KRW in funds, and from January, a monthly allowance of 30,000 KRW has been paid to 135 workers at 12 institutions within the county.
Additionally, a special monthly allowance of 50,000 KRW will be provided to workers at five elderly care facilities (129 workers) offering facility benefits within the county. This will be paid retroactively from January after securing supplementary budget.
The poor working conditions of long-term care institution workers have been a social issue for some time, but appropriate solutions have not yet been established. The county’s payment of the treatment improvement allowance is meaningful as it provides a public support measure.
County Governor Kim Soon-ho said, “Despite the increased workload due to the COVID-19 situation, I deeply appreciate the hard work of long-term care institution workers who have actively participated in quarantine measures while caring for the elderly on site. I hope that the decision to provide the allowance will help boost their morale even a little.”
