Biden: "Decision to Stop Wearing Masks Is Neanderthal-Like Thinking"
Criticism of Texas Mask Mandate Repeal
"A Big Mistake"
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] U.S. President Joe Biden criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott's decision to end the mask mandate, calling it "neanderthal thinking."
According to the White House press corps, President Biden said on the 3rd (local time) in response to questions about Texas easing mask regulations, "I think it is a big mistake," emphasizing this point.
He said, "What we should never do is engage in neanderthal thinking."
President Biden referred to the 510,000 deaths in the U.S. due to COVID-19 and warned that lifting mask regulations could be a misjudgment that undermines efforts to overcome the health crisis through expanded vaccine distribution.
He also criticized, saying, "It is absolutely necessary for all citizens to get vaccinated. We must follow the science. We must wash our hands frequently, wear masks, and maintain social distancing," adding, "Elected officials should know this fact that I know and you know."
On the same day, President Biden also posted a video on his Twitter account holding up a mask, emphasizing, "Wear a mask, wash your hands frequently, and practice social distancing."
