This is part of CIP’s localization strategy focused on collaboration with local partners.
Through this business agreement, CIP secured a support port at Mokpo New Port for the berthing facilities of ships, offshore wind power equipment such as turbines, blades, towers, fixed and floating substructures, as well as for cargo handling, assembly, storage, and future O&M (operation and maintenance), thereby obtaining the most crucial infrastructure for offshore wind power projects underway in the southwestern region.
Yoo Tae-seung, CEO of COP Korea, stated, “This business agreement with Mokpo New Port Operations Co., Ltd. has laid a solid foundation for offshore wind power projects in the southwestern region,” adding, “We expect that with the accumulated know-how of CIP/COP, a global leader in offshore wind power, and the deployment of world-class technical personnel, Mokpo New Port will leap forward as a representative offshore wind power support port in the Asia-Pacific region, and we will provide the necessary support to achieve this.” He expressed strong commitment to the collaboration.
Yeo Jong-gu, CEO of Mokpo New Port Operations Co., Ltd., said, “Through this business agreement with CIP, one of the world’s top offshore wind companies, we expect Mokpo New Port to play a pivotal role and grow as an offshore wind power support port in line with South Korea’s Green New Deal policy.”
Additionally, to celebrate and encourage the business agreement, Einar Jensen, the Danish Ambassador to Korea, who attended the signing ceremony, said, “This concrete cooperation between Mokpo New Port Operations Co., Ltd. and CIP/COP will be an important stepping stone for offshore wind power development and subsequent construction and operation in the Jeonnam region and across Korea,” and added, “It will also greatly contribute to achieving the 2050 net-zero carbon neutrality goals of both Korea and Denmark.”
Recently, Mokpo New Port has been gaining attention as a representative hub port in the Jeonnam region, where the world’s largest offshore wind farm with a capacity of 8.2GW is being promoted, and the project is included in the national port master plan.
The role of Mokpo New Port as a support port for the success of offshore wind power projects is very important. The Danish port of Esbjerg, known as the textbook example of an offshore wind power support port, was a fishing and export logistics port in the 1970s but has supported about 70% of Europe’s offshore wind power projects by accumulating technology, infrastructure, and construction know-how through the establishment of a supply chain for offshore wind power production, assembly, marine transportation, and maintenance.

CEO Yoo Tae-seung said, “Regarding this support port cooperation, we expect the successful establishment of the southwestern offshore wind power complex to contribute to achieving the government’s Green New Deal and the goal of becoming one of the top five offshore wind power countries,” and added, “Through this, we hope Mokpo New Port will grow beyond Korea’s Esbjerg port to become a global offshore wind power hinterland port, and CIP also hopes to participate and contribute to this.”
