Courier Union: "Hanjin Taekbae Prohibits Pickup in Strike Areas"... Occupation Protest Begins
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] The delivery workers' union has started an occupation protest at the Seoul headquarters of Hanjin Delivery, accusing the company of unfair labor practices.
The National Delivery Workers' Union began the occupation protest at Hanjin Delivery's headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul, around 1:30 PM on the 25th, claiming that Hanjin Delivery imposed a ban on parcel collection in strike areas, constituting unfair labor practices. Currently, 49 union members are occupying the first-floor lobby.
The delivery workers' union held a press conference in front of Hanjin's headquarters, stating, "Hanjin Delivery set the parcel collection suspension (ban on collection) from the 22nd of this month until March 31st, a period of over a month," and called it "an aggressive workplace lockout and unfair labor practice."
They continued, "Without any substantial problem resolution, this is intended to prolong the strike, threaten the livelihood of delivery workers, and neutralize the strike," and condemned, "The suspension of parcel collection even for non-union members who are not participating in the strike is causing serious economic damage."
The union plans to report the company to the Ministry of Employment and Labor regarding the ban on parcel collection. On the other hand, Hanjin explained that it is a "temporary suspension of collection to minimize customer damage."
The union also claims that some agencies unfairly dismissed union members and demands the withdrawal of the dismissals. About 300 union members are currently striking in seven locations including Gwangju, Icheon, Seongnam, Goyang in Gyeonggi Province; Geoje in Gyeongnam Province; Gimcheon in Gyeongbuk Province; and Ulsan Metropolitan City.
