[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] A public opinion survey conducted among residents of Goyang, Gimpo, and Paju in Gyeonggi Province regarding the 'free toll on Ilsan Bridge' showed that over 80% were in favor.
According to Goyang City on the 23rd, the survey was conducted via landline phone ARS from February 18 to 20, targeting a total of 2,000 residents by region: 1,000 from Goyang, 500 from Gimpo, and 500 from Paju.
The results showed that 81.5% of Goyang residents, 89.4% of Gimpo residents, and 85.5% of Paju residents supported making the Ilsan Bridge toll-free.
In particular, support for the Gyeonggi Province government’s plan to acquire the Ilsan Bridge also exceeded 70% (Goyang 71.3%, Gimpo 76.0%, Paju 77.9%).
Built through private investment, the Ilsan Bridge is the only Han River bridge that charges tolls, and users have continuously expressed dissatisfaction with the excessively high toll fees.
The toll on Ilsan Bridge is 660 KRW per kilometer, which is up to six times more expensive than other privately funded roads.
In this regard, on the 3rd, Goyang Mayor Lee Jae-jun, Gimpo Mayor Jung Ha-young, and Paju Mayor Choi Jong-hwan jointly issued a statement urging the 'free toll policy.'
