Gwangju Office of Education Holds Citizen Proposal Project Operation Report Meeting
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 21st that it held a report meeting on the operation of last year's citizen proposal projects for citizen participation budget committee members and school officials on the 18th.
This report meeting was organized to share the contents and results of the citizen proposal projects and to discuss the development direction of the citizen participation budget system.
The citizen proposal projects are implemented to design and execute educational projects applicable to school sites together with citizens, expanding the scope of the educational community, and fostering a democratic school culture by guaranteeing the rights of students, parents, faculty, and local communities to participate in school management.
Wolgok Elementary School, along with Juwol Middle School, Gwangju Hyogwang Middle School, Sungui Middle School, Jeonggwang High School, and Dongmyeong High School operated citizen proposal projects with budgets of around 10 million won per school, under themes such as ‘School autonomy growing together as owners of the school,’ ‘Strong mind, steady career, growing together Juwol community,’ and ‘Educational community creating a democratic school culture with the local community.’
Despite many restrictions due to COVID-19, the operating schools actively promoted community projects involving school members by combining face-to-face and non-face-to-face methods.
In particular, during the continued non-face-to-face remote classes last year, the ‘Overcoming COVID-19 Campaign’ gave the educational community confidence that they could overcome difficult times together.
Jeonggwang High School, which conducted projects with the local community, cited the formation of networks with the local community, the creation of the Unification Prayer Hill, and the increased interest in unification following the implementation of the national land pilgrimage as successful aspects of the citizen proposal projects.
School officials participating in the report meeting positively evaluated the various activities between the local community and schools through the citizen proposal projects and hoped to operate the citizen proposal projects again in 2021.
A citizen participation budget committee member who attended the report meeting said, “Even in the unprecedented situation of COVID-19, I could feel the efforts of the educational community that worked together, communicated, and cooperated to operate the projects wonderfully,” and added, “I hope citizen participation in educational finance will be more actively realized for the development of Gwangju education.”
