"Opposition to Logistics Complex Next to Sorae Wetland Ecological Park"... What Is Incheon City's Response to the Citizen Petition?
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Attention is focused on what stance the city of Incheon will take in the future, as a citizen petition opposing the plan to build a large logistics complex near Sorae Wetland Ecological Park in Incheon has met the official response requirement of the Incheon city government.
According to Incheon city on the 20th, a citizen petition opposing the construction of a nine-story large logistics warehouse in the Nonhyeon-dong area of Namdong-gu has gained over 3,000 signatures as of the 18th. The city is required to respond within 10 days to petitions with more than 3,000 signatures.
Incheon city and Namdong-gu are reportedly scheduled to hold a countermeasure meeting on the 22nd to discuss the response direction regarding the logistics complex development project.
The logistics complex development project involves building a logistics warehouse with one basement floor and nine above-ground floors (total floor area of 492,000㎡) at 66-12 Nonhyeon-dong.
Namdong-gu applied for a traffic impact assessment review to Incheon city in December last year, but Incheon city requested a re-investigation of the traffic impact assessment report submitted by the project operator, effectively putting the project on hold.
This decision was based on the judgment that it is necessary to comprehensively supplement the impacts of the logistics complex construction on surrounding traffic, environment, and landscape.
The site for the logistics complex is a semi-industrial area where ready-mix concrete plants are located, but it is also an area where restoration and revitalization plans for Sorae Wetland Ecological Park are being promoted.
For this reason, local environmental groups and residents oppose the project, stating that the planned site is close to Sorae Wetland and Jangsuchon Stream, raising concerns about potential ecosystem destruction and traffic congestion due to increased vehicle movement.
The Incheon Green Alliance pointed out, "The ready-mix concrete plant on the planned logistics warehouse site is already adversely affecting the surrounding environment, and if more than 6,000 vehicles pass through here daily, it will cause not only exhaust fumes, noise, and traffic congestion but also pollutants will flow into Jangsuchon Stream and Sorae Gaetgol."
