View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A driver suffered severe finger injuries due to a high-end vehicle option. This option automatically closes the car door when it is not fully shut, and the driver involved in the accident had part of a finger severed.
According to SBS on the 20th, the accident victim, Mr. A, explained the situation: "My right hand was slightly caught when I bent down to pick up my dropped phone. I didn’t even think my finger was trapped and closed the door, but I screamed as it got caught and pulled in."
Mr. A’s vehicle was equipped with a premium convenience feature that automatically closes the door tightly even when it is just slightly pushed, leaving a gap of about 4 to 6 mm before the motor force fully shuts it.
However, the finger got caught in the door as it closed automatically, and when the door was quickly opened, part of the finger was already severed.
Immediately after the accident, a manufacturer representative explained, "If an object is caught, there is no function to reopen the door like a window. It is dangerous for households with young children." However, the manufacturer stated that they have been warning about the risks through warning stickers on the car door and the user manual.
Mr. A underwent a six-hour major surgery to stitch the finger, but it is still uncertain whether the injured finger will regain full function.

Similar cases of finger amputation have occurred abroad, and injury reports have been posted online. According to SBS, manufacturers are not yet considering installing safety devices such as sensors to prevent accidents.
