Yongsan-gu 'History Awareness' Expert Training Program

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yongsan-gu (Mayor Seongjanghyun) will operate the "Yongsan History Correct Informer" expert training course 21 times (twice a week) from March 11 to May 20.
The classes are divided into Understanding the Flow of Korean History (Part 1), Facing Yongsan History (Part 2), and History Interpreter Training Course (Part 3), combining theory and field education.
The Understanding the Flow of Korean History course covers the prehistoric era to the early Iron Age, competition and culture of the Three Kingdoms, foreign relations of the Three Kingdoms, Goryeo aristocratic culture and domestic issues, Goryeo's foreign relations and Buddhist culture, the founding of Joseon to the Japanese invasions, the Later Jin invasion to factional politics in sequence.
The period of Heungseon Daewongun's rule, the invasion of the great powers (1876?1900), Japanese aggression (1900?1909), the Japanese colonial period, activities of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, liberation, and the Korean War are organized as the Facing Yongsan History course.
The History Interpreter Training Course proceeds in the order of the role of Yongsan History Correct Informer, preservation and utilization of local cultural heritage, program planning and teaching materials, interpretation demonstration, and graduation ceremony.
Class hours are every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the period, held at the District Lifelong Learning Center (224-19 Itaewon-ro, 2nd floor of Hannam-dong Public Parking Lot) and online meeting room (Zoom).
Face-to-face and non-face-to-face classes will be mixed depending on the COVID-19 situation.
Field trip sites include the memorial monument of activist Yu Gwansun, Hyochang Park, Baekbeom Kim Gu Memorial Hall, Lee Bong-chang Activist History Hall, and the open site of Yongsan Park.
A district official said, "We will support students to work as local history interpreters in connection with major district projects such as the establishment of the Yongsan History Museum and the designation of the Historical and Cultural Renaissance Special Zone (tentative name). We hope residents will contribute to preserving and continuing local history."
Those who wish to participate can apply through the district education comprehensive portal.
The application period is from 9 a.m. on the 22nd to 6 p.m. on March 8, the tuition fee is 20,000 KRW, and field experience fees are separate. The capacity is 25 people.
In addition to the History Correct Informer training course, the district is also recruiting students for the Korean language class. There are two classes: "Maru (beginner)" and "Iruri (basic)" with capacities of 15 and 25 people respectively.
The curriculum includes Korean final consonants, combination of Korean consonants and vowels, and word structure. Basic arithmetic classes such as place value and decimal system principles are also conducted.
Classes will be held twice a week for 60 sessions from March 3 to December 6. Those who wish to participate can apply through the district education comprehensive portal from February 22. Visits to the Talent Development Center and phone applications are also possible. First-come, first-served.
The education fee is free.

Seongjanghyun, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, "In connection with the district's history correction project, we have been training local history interpreters over several years," adding, "It will contribute to the revitalization of Yongsan's historical culture."
