Seoul City Tackles Odor in Doksan-dong Usijang Area... Establishes Clean Zone Within 300m Radius
Installation of Odor Reduction Systems such as Air Curtains and Clean Road Systems... Odor Reduction through Prior Treatment Facility Installation for Livestock Waste
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City announced on the 18th that it will take action to tackle the biggest issue identified by residents and merchants in the Doksan-dong Usijang area?odor?as part of its urban regeneration project.
Seoul City plans to designate a 300-meter radius around Usijang as a clean zone, installing systems to reduce odor such as air curtains and clean road systems. In connection with the Green Butcher Shop project, it will also establish a pre-treatment facility for livestock waste.
Following a preliminary investigation into the current status of odor generation, the city analyzed that the area within a 300-meter radius around Usijang is affected by odor. Accordingly, this area will be designated as a clean zone, and a detailed odor status survey will be conducted on 22 types of odor-causing substances from livestock waste, including ammonia, which is classified as a designated odor substance.
The odor status survey will be conducted from multiple perspectives, including an investigation of odor sources, odor generation trends, and odor-affected areas. After the survey, to control severe sewage odor, an odor map will be created. Using comprehensive information such as markets, septic tanks, and sewage flow, the city will predict odor generation in water and air, and establish a basic plan for maintaining and managing the clean zone and for effective odor reduction measures.
After establishing the basic plan, resident surveys and merchant briefings will be held to reflect opinions. By the end of this year, detailed designs for building an odor reduction system will be completed, including the installation of odor reduction sensors and devices, air curtains and clean road systems, and odor reduction agent spraying facilities (utilizing EM).
Additionally, as part of a linked project with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, a pre-treatment facility for livestock waste will be installed on the second basement floor of the ‘Green Butcher Shop’ currently under construction. This facility will pre-treat livestock wastewater and by-products generated in the shared workspace on the first basement floor to prevent pollutants from entering the sewage pipes, effectively controlling odor and preventing water pollution.
