S-OIL Holds Science Culture Foundation Awards Ceremony
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] S-OIL, a public interest foundation established by S-OIL, held the 10th S-OIL Excellent Thesis Award Ceremony and the 2nd Next-Generation Scientist Award Ceremony on the 16th at its headquarters in Gongdeok-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Considering the spread of COVID-19, the event was conducted briefly with a minimized number of attendees and in compliance with quarantine guidelines.
Research grants totaling 138 million KRW were awarded to 12 young scientists and their 12 advisors selected for outstanding theses in six scientific fields: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Chemical Engineering/Materials Engineering, and IT. Additionally, 240 million KRW was awarded to six mid-career researchers selected as next-generation scientists in six fields: Physics, Chemistry, Physiological Medicine, Chemical Engineering/Materials Engineering, Energy, and IT.
The grand prize winners for outstanding theses were ▲Mathematics: Dr. Jeon Jeong-min (Seoul National University), who researched Hilbert reaction variables ▲Physics: Dr. Kim Kang-won (Sogang University), who studied Raman spectroscopy of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic materials ▲Chemistry: Dr. Hong Seung-yoon (KAIST), who researched transition metal catalyst development ▲Biology: Dr. Yoo Da-seul (KAIST), who studied intracellular protein functions through the development of antibody optogenetics technology ▲Chemical Engineering/Materials Engineering: Dr. Lee Sang-seok (KAIST), who researched microfluidic encapsulation and its applications ▲IT: Dr. Baek Seung-hwan (KAIST), who researched computational imaging using optical wave properties, each receiving 15 million KRW in research funding. Additionally, the excellence awards were given to Dr. Park Jong-ho (Mathematical Sciences, KAIST), Dr. Park Sung-min (Physics, Seoul National University), Dr. Bae Sung-hee (Inorganic Chemistry, Ewha Womans University), Dr. Kim Yo-han (Clinical Sciences, Hanyang University), Dr. Lee Sang-myeon (Energy Engineering, UNIST), and Dr. Kwon Ki-rim (Electrical and Electronic Engineering, KAIST), each receiving 8 million KRW.
The next-generation scientist awards were given to ▲Physics: Dr. Kim Sung-woong (Sungkyunkwan University), who developed a new concept electronic compound magnet material ▲Chemistry: Dr. Lim Mi-hee (KAIST), who identified connecting factors of multiple risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and succeeded in toxicity suppression ▲Physiological Medicine: Dr. Jung Ga-young (Sungkyunkwan University), who published research on the binding principles of GPCR and G protein ▲Chemical Engineering/Materials Engineering: Dr. Koo Jong-min (KIST), who contributed to solving environmental pollution through plastic waste recycling technology ▲Energy: Dr. Park Jong-hyuk (Yonsei University), who researched next-generation solar hydrogen production ▲IT: Dr. Kim Sung-jae (Seoul National University), who developed small-scale desalination devices applied to portable artificial kidneys, receiving a total of 40 million KRW.
