Myanmar Military Fires on Protesters... Number of Casualties Uncertain
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] On the 15th (local time), Myanmar military police fired shots to disperse protesters in Mandalay, the second largest city.
Major foreign media outlets cited the local media 'Frontier Myanmar' on the same day, reporting that one of the student protest members said, "Some people were injured," and that the exact number of casualties from the military police firing was unclear.
The military, which seized power through a coup on the 1st, moved troops to major cities including Yangon, the center of protests, as well as Myitkyina in northern Kachin State and Sittwe in western Rakhine State the previous evening, signaling a strong crackdown.
Protesters held placards with English phrases such as "We do not recognize the coup" and "We support civil disobedience" in front of and behind armored vehicles deployed on major roads in downtown Yangon.
