Making Cultural Heritage Restoration Decisions More Scientific
Cultural Heritage Administration Builds Integrated HBIM for Cultural Heritage Repair History Management
"Systematic Information Management of Material Data and Repair History by Component"
Applied to 221 Cases by 2025, "Encouraging Local Governments to Establish as Well"
The decision-making process for cultural heritage restoration will become more scientific and systematic.
On the 15th, the Cultural Heritage Administration announced that it will establish HBIM (Historic Building Information Modeling) to integrate and manage the restoration history of cultural heritage. The plan is to apply it to 221 national treasures and treasures of architectural cultural heritage by 2025.
HBIM is an integrated information model that includes 3D information of architectural cultural heritage and data related to restoration history. BIM (Building Information Modeling) has been frequently applied in general architecture for design and construction. However, it has rarely been utilized in the field of cultural heritage restoration due to difficulties in standardization. Recently, with the development of 3D laser scanning and computer performance, there is sufficient potential for its application.
An official from the Cultural Heritage Administration explained, "Once HBIM is established, it will be possible to check in 3D the joining methods of major structural parts of architectural cultural heritage, which were previously difficult to verify, as well as the shapes of internal components. Systematic information management such as material information for each major component, restoration history (cause of damage, restoration cycle, restoration method) will enable scientific decision-making during cultural heritage restoration."

A Cultural Heritage Administration official said, "We plan to disclose the established HBIM information to the public to assist in the production and dissemination of various digital contents related to cultural heritage, such as virtual and augmented reality (VR·AR) and 3D printing."
This year, the Cultural Heritage Administration will establish HBIM for 27 national treasures and treasures of architectural cultural heritage, including Bongjeongsa Geungnakjeon in Andong, Daewoongjeon of Sudeoksa in Yesan, Muryangsujeon of Buseoksa in Yeongju, Palsangjeon of Beopjusa in Boeun, Guksajeon of Songgwangsa in Suncheon, Geungnakbojeon of Muwisa in Gangjin, and Janggyungpanjeon of Haeinsa in Hapcheon. The plan is to build HBIM for 221 sites by 2025. An official stated, "In October, we will announce the 'Standards for Creating HBIM for Architectural Cultural Heritage' to encourage local governments directly managing cultural heritage to build HBIM according to unified standards."
