Tesla to Establish Factory in Karnataka, Southern India... Chief Minister Officially Confirms
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] U.S. electric vehicle company Tesla is establishing its first local factory in Karnataka, southern India, and is set to officially enter the Indian market.
According to Indian media on the 14th, BS Yediyurappa, Chief Minister of Karnataka, announced in a statement the previous day that "the U.S. company Tesla will open an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in our state."
Last month, Tesla registered a corporation in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka and a key information technology (IT) city, and has been conducting due diligence for factory establishment, including securing land and scouting parts suppliers.
It is also analyzed that the manufacturing plant will likely be established near Bengaluru. This is because Chief Minister Yediyurappa announced plans to invest 77.25 billion rupees (approximately 1.17 trillion won) to build an industrial zone in the Tumkur district near Bengaluru in his recent statement.
Elon Musk, Tesla's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), has been gradually revealing plans to enter India since the end of last year. On December 27 last year, Musk tweeted in response to a question about recent updates on Tesla's India entry plans, saying, "No. But definitely this year."

Local media expect that Tesla's first model to be introduced in India will be the Model 3. The Indian government is promoting a large-scale electric vehicle distribution project to reduce air pollution. However, there are concerns about whether government policies will materialize as planned due to India's very poor electric vehicle infrastructure. In fact, Ola, a ride-sharing taxi service company, launched an electric vehicle project in Nagpur, central India, in 2017 but faced difficulties due to long charging times and high maintenance costs.
