Io Seong Movement Online Party Member Vote on the 10th... Decision on Support for Draghi Coalition
[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] Italy's largest party, the Five Star Movement, will decide through an online party member vote whether to support the coalition government led by former European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi.
According to major foreign media, the Five Star Movement's online party member vote will begin at 1 p.m. local time on the 10th and will last for 24 hours.
The Five Star Movement currently holds about 30% of the seats in both chambers of the Italian Parliament, making it the largest party. Previously, it formed a coalition government with the center-left Democratic Party and Italia Viva (IV), led by former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, to lead the political landscape. However, the coalition collapsed last month when IV declared its withdrawal from the coalition.
Currently, former ECB President Mario Draghi has been nominated as the new prime minister candidate and negotiations are underway to form a new coalition government.
The Democratic Party, IV, and the conservative Forza Italia (FI), led by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, have already declared their support for Draghi.
If the Five Star Movement, which holds the most seats, supports the coalition, it will be easier to form the government. Draghi needs the support of either the Five Star Movement or the League (Lega), the second-largest party in parliament, to secure a majority of seats and establish a stable coalition.
Initially, the Five Star Movement expressed opposition to Draghi. However, on the 6th, Five Star Movement leader Vito Crimi met with Draghi, the prime minister candidate, and after discussing policies, hinted at the possibility of support.
According to an Ipsos poll, 55% of Five Star Movement supporters want the party to support Draghi, while 40% oppose it.
Since this online vote is limited to party members, the results may differ from the general opinion poll of Five Star Movement supporters.
