[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The Supreme Court has disclosed 15 candidates for the nomination to succeed Justice Park Sang-ok (65, Judicial Research and Training Institute Class 11), whose term ends this May.
The Supreme Court announced on the 9th that it received recommendations for 40 candidates to succeed Justice Park over a ten-day period starting from the 15th of last month, and among them, 15 agreed to be reviewed by the Supreme Court Justice Candidate Recommendation Committee. The candidates for the new justice position include 13 judges, 1 lawyer, and 1 professor. The list includes Seoul High Court Presiding Judge Jung Jun-young, who sentenced Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong to prison for involvement in the 'state affairs manipulation' scandal, and Seoul Western District Court Presiding Judge Jung Kye-sun, who was the first to rule in the first trial of former President Lee Myung-bak that "DAS belongs to former President Lee." Four of the candidates, including Judge Jung, are women.
The list of those who consented to the review is available on the Supreme Court of Korea's website (www.scourt.go.kr) under the public service section. Information submitted by the candidates regarding their education, major career achievements, assets, military service, and criminal records is also disclosed. The Supreme Court plans to collect public opinions from the 10th to the 23rd of this month. Afterwards, the Supreme Court Justice Candidate Recommendation Committee will review the nominees and select at least three candidates deemed suitable for the justice position.
The Candidate Recommendation Committee consists of six ex officio members and four non-ex officio members. The ex officio members include the senior justice, the head of the Court Administration Office, the Minister of Justice, the President of the Korean Bar Association, the President of the Korean Association of Law Professors, and the Chairperson of the Association of Law Schools. The non-ex officio members are external figures such as Park Kyung-seo, President of the Korean Red Cross; Kim Hye-sook, President of Ewha Womans University; and Kang Jeong-hwa, President of the Korea Consumer Federation. Park Ki-ppeum, a research fellow at the Judicial Policy Research Institute, was appointed as a judicial member who is not a justice.
