KEPCO Wins 'Green Premium'
Expansion Including LG Chem and Hanwha Q CELLS
[Asia Economy Choi Dae-yeol] SK IE Technology (SKIET) has decided to use 100% eco-friendly electricity generated by green methods at all its domestic business sites. LG Chem has also committed to using only green electricity at its Yeosu specialty resin plant and Osan Tech Center.
According to the industry on the 9th, SK IE Technology (SK IET) and other companies operating factories in Korea participated in the Korea Electric Power Corporation's recent 'Green Premium' bidding and won the contract for the entire day. The Green Premium system, introduced for the first time this year, is a renewable energy electricity purchase program established by KEPCO, which recognizes the use of electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro power when an additional fee is paid.
SK IET participated in this bidding targeting its factories in Chungbuk Jeungpyeong and Cheongju, which produce separators, a key component of electric vehicle batteries. While some factories partially use renewable energy for their electricity consumption, SK IET is the first domestic company to operate its entire factory using such energy.
This bidding was for domestic factories, but the company plans to introduce eco-friendly electricity to its overseas business sites as well. Additionally, it plans to purchase renewable energy certificates or enter into power purchase agreements directly with renewable energy producers to receive recognition for greenhouse gas reduction. No Jae-seok, CEO of SK IET, said, "We will strive to practice environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management by producing products that can improve environmental issues and achieving eco-friendliness in the production process."
LG Chem also won the bid and will use 120 GWh of renewable energy annually, which is equivalent to the electricity consumption of about 28,000 households for one year. With this measure, all electricity at the Yeosu specialty resin plant and Osan Tech Center, and 30% of the electricity used at the Cheongju plant will be supplied through this method. Shin Hak-cheol, Vice Chairman of LG Chem, said, "We will actively secure renewable energy by establishing concrete strategies across all business areas."
In addition, Hanwha Q CELLS, which manufactures solar power generation equipment, won the Green Premium bid and decided to operate self-generation facilities. The company has been operating solar power plants using idle parking lots and rooftops at its Jincheon plant, and plans to build an additional 2MW power plant by further utilizing the rooftops of factory buildings.
