Jeju Seongsan Port Haenyeo Dies While Harvesting Conch at Sea
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters (Jeju) Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Seogwipo Coast Guard announced on the morning of the 7th that Haenyeo A (83) died while collecting conchs near the northern breakwater of Seongsan Port, Seogwipo.
At around 11:20 a.m. that day, a report was received by the coast guard that fellow Haenyeo A was missing near the northern breakwater of Seongsan Port.
The Seogwipo Coast Guard immediately dispatched patrol vessels, rescue teams, and coastal rescue boats from the local police station, and within about 10 minutes of searching, a Haenyeo work boat found A near the northern breakwater of Seongsan Port and transported her to the hospital, but she ultimately passed away.
A was reported to have been unconscious and not breathing when found.
It was confirmed that about 20 Haenyeo had been collecting conchs in the area since around 10 a.m. that day.
