The Gwangju Citizens and Social Organizations Federation (hereafter Federation), composed of 523 local groups, issued an appeal on the 4th stating, “Gwangju, which has been managed as a COVID-19 clean area, is now facing a serious situation with a large-scale outbreak of confirmed cases,” and urged citizens to “actively cooperate with Gwangju Metropolitan City and disease control policies to prevent the spread of confirmed cases, as we deeply feel the crisis caused by the anxiety and nervousness affecting citizens’ daily lives and economic activities due to COVID-19 transmission.”
The Federation said, “Although Gwangju is going through a more difficult time than ever due to COVID-19, Gwangju citizens, medical staff, and quarantine authorities are united in one mind, making every effort to protect the safety of the Gwangju community,” adding, “In particular, Gwangju’s proactive measures such as testing before release from isolation and comprehensive testing of high-risk social welfare facilities and medical institutions serve as a model for the government and other local governments.”
They continued, “However, this year, 704 local infections have occurred this month alone due to cluster infections in densely populated and enclosed spaces such as nursing hospitals, churches, and unauthorized educational facilities,” expressing concern that “while the average daily confirmed cases last year were 3.2, the average daily cases this month have risen to 22.7.”
They emphasized existing quarantine rules including ▲ prohibition of private gatherings of five or more people ▲ spending the Lunar New Year holiday at home ▲ non-face-to-face online worship services at churches ▲ mandatory COVID-19 testing for visitors to adult arcades ▲ prohibition of visits to nursing hospitals and nursing facilities ▲ prohibition of gatherings at entertainment venues and recreational sports clubs, appealing for citizens’ participation.
