Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority Joins United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) for Sustainable Management
Compliance with International Standards in Environment, Labor, Human Rights, and Anti-Corruption Fields
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (President Cha Min-sik, hereinafter referred to as the Authority) announced on the 3rd that it will participate in the United Nations Global Compact (hereinafter ‘UNGC’), an international initiative promoting corporate social responsibility at the UN level.
Launched in July 2000, the UNGC is the world’s largest voluntary corporate citizenship initiative under the UN, currently involving over 14,000 members from 157 countries worldwide.
By adhering to the 10 principles in the areas of environment, labor, human rights, and anti-corruption, it supports member companies in internalizing sustainable management and contributes to global sustainability through Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other efforts.
The Authority is leading sustainable management by producing a human rights management leaflet in accordance with the 10 principles of the UNGC, establishing a job-centered organizational culture, installing AMP to reduce greenhouse gases, expanding the use of recycled asphalt, and holding anti-corruption and integrity pledge ceremonies for all employees.
Meanwhile, the 10 principles of the UNGC originate from the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (1998), the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development (1992), and the United Nations Convention against Corruption (2003).
President Cha Min-sik said regarding the participation in the UNGC, “We will comply with the 10 principles concerning environment, labor, human rights, and anti-corruption, and take the lead in fulfilling social responsibility through the advancement of sustainable management.”
He added, “To leap forward as a smart port together with the public, we will build a trusted authority that actively communicates not only with port stakeholders but also with the public.”
