[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Namdong-gu, Incheon announced on the 1st that it has established an automated mask production facility utilizing local vocational rehabilitation centers for the disabled.
The district plans to begin full-scale mask production within the first half of this year after completing the mask manufacturing permit process and safety certification from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
Once the production facility is fully operational, it is expected to produce 7,000 masks per day, totaling 1 million masks annually.
The produced masks will first be distributed to 30,000 vulnerable people, including basic livelihood security recipients, lower-income groups, and social welfare facilities. The district plans to designate the facility as a production center for people with severe disabilities and sell masks to the general public as well.
Earlier, Lee Kang-ho, Mayor of Namdong-gu, emphasized the importance of stable supply of public masks during a COVID-19 countermeasure meeting in April last year when the mask shortage crisis occurred, and instructed direct mask production.
In particular, to improve income and create jobs for people with disabilities, it was decided to produce finished masks at the district-run vocational rehabilitation centers for the disabled.
