Considering Suspension of International Flights to Block German Variant Virus
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Germany is reportedly considering suspending international flights to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) variant, according to German media Deutsche Welle on the 26th (local time).
Horst Seehofer, Germany's Minister of the Interior, mentioned Israel's case and said that a suspension of all international flights is under consideration. Israel decided to close Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv from midnight on the same day until the end of the month. Minister Seehofer added that measures to close borders are also being actively considered to block the COVID-19 variant.
Minister Seehofer stated, "With the emergence of the variant virus, the risk has increased, and therefore, strong measures must be taken." He further mentioned that strong measures could include stricter border inspections focused on high-risk areas and reducing flights entering Germany to nearly zero, similar to what Israel is currently doing.
