Winia Dimchae Develops 'Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer' for COVID-19 Vaccines... "Launching Within Q1"
All Vaccines Introduced in Korea, Including Pfizer and Moderna, Can Be Stored
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Winia Dimchae, a home appliance subsidiary of Daeyu Winia Group, has developed an ultra-low temperature freezer to store the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccines to be introduced in Korea. It is scheduled to be launched in the market as early as before March this year.
On the 27th, Winia Dimchae stated, "We have succeeded in developing an ultra-low temperature freezer that can safely store COVID-19 vaccines in collaboration with our affiliate Daeyu Plus, and we are currently undergoing certification for standards," adding, "We aim to launch it within the first quarter of this year."
The name of the COVID-19 vaccine freezer is 'MediBox.' Winia Dimchae explained that they have filed a trademark application for this name with the Korean Intellectual Property Office and are also applying for three related technology patents. Daeyu Plus, which manufactures kimchi refrigerators, is pursuing medical device manufacturing approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
MediBox is a compact ultra-low temperature freezer with a capacity of 90L and a weight of 65 kg, making it easy to transport vaccines. Each freezer can store enough COVID-19 vaccines for approximately 18,000 people.
With temperature settings adjustable from minus 80 degrees Celsius to plus 10 degrees Celsius, the company explained that it can custom-store all vaccines scheduled for domestic inoculation, including the UK Pfizer and US Moderna vaccines that require ultra-low temperature storage at minus 70 to 80 degrees Celsius, as well as those that can be stored at room temperature.
The freezer also includes a menu to select different storage temperatures for each vaccine. Additionally, by using an inverter compressor and a separate battery pack, it can maintain ultra-low temperatures for 1 to 2 hours during distribution and storage. A temperature recording device is built into the freezer to monitor temperature changes in real time during distribution.

A Winia Dimchae official said, "The Winia ultra-low temperature freezer is smaller and lighter than medium and large ultra-low temperature freezers, allowing vaccines to be safely and easily delivered to final vaccination institutions such as public health centers and local clinics," adding, "Starting with vaccine freezers, we plan to enter the medical device market with related affiliates."
