Naju Mayor Kang In-gyu Visits Bae Seon-gwaejang Ahead of Lunar New Year
[Naju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Han-hyuk] Kang In-gyu, mayor of Naju, Jeollanam-do, visited seven sorting and packaging centers including Naju Base APC, Naju Pear Cooperative, and Yeongsanpo Nonghyup, where Naju pear sorting and packaging work was in full swing, on the 25th and 26th ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.
According to the Naju Agricultural Technology Center, the volume of Naju pears shipped through local agricultural cooperatives during this Lunar New Year holiday period is estimated to be about 936 tons.
Due to last year's abnormal low-temperature phenomenon and successive typhoons, the shipment volume decreased by about 65% compared to the previous year's shipment volume (2,735 tons).
In the Naju area, an abnormal low-temperature phenomenon occurred from late March to early April, around the pear flowering period last year, with temperatures dropping to minus 4℃, and as a result, 972 hectares, or 50% of the 1,943 hectares of pear cultivation area, were found to have suffered low-temperature damage.
Due to the decrease in shipment volume, the average auction price at the wholesale market for the representative shipment item, Singo pears (premium grade/15kg box), is expected to be formed between 60,000 and 65,000 won, more than twice last year's price.

Mayor Kang In-gyu said, “Due to last year's abnormal low temperatures and typhoon impacts, pear production and storage volumes have significantly decreased, so prices are expected to be higher than usual,” and added, “I appreciate the efforts of the sorting center staff who are working hard to select high-quality pears to maintain the reputation of Naju pears despite the difficult conditions.”
