Hyundai Rotem Completes Development of Wheeled Command Vehicle
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] Hyundai Rotem has developed a wheeled command post vehicle to command and control our Army units on the battlefield.
Hyundai Rotem announced on the 26th that it has successfully completed the system development of the wheeled command post vehicle ordered from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration. Hyundai Rotem won the system development project for the wheeled command post vehicle in 2017, received combat suitability certification in December last year, and completed defense standardization.
The newly developed wheeled command post vehicle features a network-based combat command system that shares battlefield information in real time, enabling rapid and efficient unit command even while on the move. Through this, it performs the core functions of 'Army TIGER 4.0,' the AI-based future ground combat system promoted by the Army.
The wheeled command post vehicle is a variant of the wheeled armored vehicle (K808) designed for infantry combat. To optimize performance in Korea's terrain, which includes many mountains and rivers, it is equipped with run-flat tires that can operate even when punctured, an automatic tire pressure control device, and a water propulsion device for river crossing. Additionally, a positive pressure system capable of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) protection has been applied to enhance combat survivability.
Furthermore, the vehicle is equipped internally with advanced network-based combat command system equipment, real-time transmission and reception systems, and screens, enabling systematic and efficient combat command even while moving. Previously, command posts had to be established at fixed locations to issue precise military operation orders in real time.
Moreover, compared to existing wheeled armored vehicles, the interior height has been increased to improve crew convenience, and a command tent is loaded on top of the vehicle, allowing rapid establishment of a command post without a separate transport vehicle. An auxiliary generator is also provided, enabling combat command and control even if the engine fails.
The wheeled command post vehicle has a domestic production rate of about 98% based on the number of parts. The high domestic production rate allows smooth logistics support even in case of malfunctions, minimizing operational gaps and reducing maintenance costs.
The wheeled command post vehicle is scheduled for mass production worth approximately 1.2 trillion KRW, with expectations for additional orders in the future. Hyundai Rotem has standardized wheeled weapon systems, including the wheeled command post vehicle and the 30mm wheeled anti-aircraft gun chassis, based on its know-how in developing wheeled armored vehicle systems reflecting Hyundai Motor Group's core technologies, and is also developing a wheeled medical evacuation vehicle equipped with medical kits.
Additionally, Hyundai Rotem plans to expand the wheeled armored vehicle lineup through performance improvements and standardization to accommodate various weapon systems according to military requirements.
