Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok, Busy Addressing Local Issues
Recommendation to Minister Jeon Hae-cheol of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety for the Enactment of the Yeosun Incident Special Act
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, is working tirelessly to resolve regional issues.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 22nd, Governor Kim met with Jeon Hae-cheol, Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, at the government Seoul office to propose six regional issues: ▲Special Act on the Yeosu-Suncheon 10·19 Incident ▲Establishment of the Korea Island Promotion Agency in Jeonnam ▲Act on Hometown Love Donations ▲Special Act on Support for Local Extinction Risk Areas ▲Local Autonomy Act ▲Improvements related to local fiscal decentralization.
Governor Kim stated, “The Special Act on the Yeosu-Suncheon 10·19 Incident is currently under review by the first legislative review subcommittee of the Administrative Safety Committee and has held a legislative public hearing, but it has never been examined even once. Since most of the bereaved families have passed away or are elderly, it is urgent to clarify the truth at the national level and restore the honor of the victims. We ask for support so that the special act can be enacted promptly.”
He also explained about the establishment of the Korea Island Promotion Agency.
Governor Kim emphasized, “Jeonnam has the most islands in the country and is home to many island-related institutions, making it the optimal place to implement island development policies and projects. Considering the efforts made so far to establish and attract the Korea Island Promotion Agency, it must be established in Jeonnam.”
He further mentioned, “Due to the concentration of the economically active population in large cities, the socio-economic foundation imbalance between metropolitan and local areas is worsening along with the tax revenue gap. Please consider enacting the Act on Hometown Love Donations to introduce the ‘Hometown Love Donation System,’ which allows individuals to donate to local governments.”
