Naju-si to Complete 'Wondosim Undergrounding Project' by Year-End
[Naju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Naju City, Jeollanam-do, announced on the 21st that it plans to complete the undergrounding project in four downtown districts (Yeonggang, Geumnam, Seongbuk, Ichang) by the end of this year, according to the "Three-Year Plan for Downtown Undergrounding Project (2019~2021)" established in 2018.
"Undergrounding" refers to the process of burying overhead power distribution and communication lines underground.
The undergrounding of overhead distribution lines installed in traffic-congested areas and multi-use facilities, as well as the removal of utility poles, improves urban aesthetics and ensures safety from climate conditions such as lightning and wind damage, as well as external failure factors.
The city, together with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and telecommunications companies, is investing 10.8 billion KRW to carry out the undergrounding project over a total length of 4.27 km in Yeonggang-dong (L=0.35 km, Yeonggang Intersection to Nonghyup), Geumnam-dong (L=0.97 km, Naju Hyanggyo to Seongbuk Children's Center), Seongbuk-dong (L=1.81 km, Naju Bus Terminal to Jungbu Senior Welfare Center), and Ichang-dong (L=1.14 km, Ichang Administrative Welfare Center to Yeongsanpo Bus Terminal) by the end of this year.
Among these, the Seongbuk-dong area began construction in October last year, has surpassed 30% progress, and is scheduled for completion in August.

Mayor Kang In-gyu stated, "To minimize inconvenience caused by road excavation, we will reflect pedestrian-centered opinions as much as possible by adjusting the project schedule," and added, "We will do our best to promote the project so that it contributes not only to creating safe and pleasant streets but also to tourism revitalization linked with the restoration of the four gates of Naju Eupseong and the Urban Regeneration New Deal project."
