View original image[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] The Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency apprehended 17 drunk drivers during a special nighttime drunk driving crackdown on the 14th.
The Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency announced on the 15th, "From 9 PM on the 14th, for two hours, we conducted a special drunk driving crackdown at vulnerable locations within 13 police stations in the jurisdiction, deploying over 200 police officers and 43 patrol cars."
According to the police crackdown results, among the drunk drivers, 13 had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or higher, which is the license cancellation threshold, and 4 had a BAC between 0.03% and less than 0.08%, which is the suspension threshold. The highest BAC recorded was 0.185%.
This special crackdown aimed to demonstrate the police's determination to eradicate drunk driving through surprise inspections and to prevent drunk driving in advance.
The police plan to continue conducting strong drunk driving crackdowns day and night every day at vulnerable locations this year as well.
Meanwhile, the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency apprehended a total of 7,527 drunk drivers last year, and deaths caused by drunk driving accounted for 14.9% of all traffic accident fatalities.
The police also plan to apply a zero-tolerance policy toward drunk driving offenders, punishing not only the drunk drivers but also passengers who aid and abet, and considering vehicle confiscation for habitual drunk drivers.
