[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Samsung Electronics identified the TV trends at this year's home appliances and information technology exhibition 'CES 2021' as innovative technologies such as Mini LED, enhanced smart features, and eco-friendly products.
On the 15th, during an online TV media briefing, Samsung Electronics announced that the major trends in the TV industry observed through this year's CES were the application of Mini LED, improvements in optical structures, and the expansion of premium product lines utilizing Quantum Dot technology.
Samsung Electronics analyzed that more companies have applied Mini LED technology to improve contrast ratio and Quantum Dot technology to achieve more accurate color representation and brightness enhancement. The company showcased Mini LED technology by unveiling 'Neo QLED' at this exhibition.
Furthermore, it emphasized the evolution of AI-based processors that control TV picture and sound quality to realize visuals closer to nature. It explained that these processors are evolving from optimizing picture and sound quality according to content characteristics to autonomously controlling picture and sound based on surrounding environment and user location.
With increased time spent indoors, smart features for gaming, health, and movies have been significantly enhanced. This year, many companies actively strengthened TV gaming functions and proposed various directions for ecosystem development.
Samsung Electronics supported improvements such as reduced input lag, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) compatibility, and 4K 120Hz support to enable better gaming visuals on TVs. This hardware enhancement for improved gaming visuals is expanding across the entire industry.
Due to the spread of COVID-19, the number of consumers wanting to enjoy games on large screens at home has increased. To attract more consumers via TVs, the industry provided cloud gaming services such as Google Stadia, Microsoft xCloud, and NVIDIA GeForce Now, and introduced specialized products.
Monitor functions are also being enhanced. High-definition innovations aimed at providing premium gaming experiences with lifelike environments are emphasized. Numerous UHD gaming models applying HDMI 2.1 targeting high-definition PC gaming and the high-spec new console market were introduced.
Services supporting various activities conducted at home also attracted industry attention. Companies increased offerings such as training services like Samsung Health's 'Smart Trainer,' smart monitors for remote work, and enhanced content recommendation features for online video streaming services (OTT). In audio products, trends showed expanded music experiences or connectivity through strengthened external collaborations, similar to TVs.
