Following Proposal by Lee Seong, Guro-gu Mayor, Kim Soo-young of Yangcheon, Yuseong-hoon of Geumcheon, and Chae Hyun-il of Yeongdeungpo Hold Video Conference on 11th and Sign Agreement to Promote Anyangcheon Landmark Project
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] On the 12th at 10 a.m., an online agreement ceremony was held to promote the development of Anyangcheon as a landmark, attended by Lee Seong, Mayor of Guro-gu, Kim Soo-young, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, Yoo Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, and Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu.
At the ceremony, the four mayors of the southwestern Seoul districts expressed their commitment to participate in the project.
Lee Seong, Mayor of Guro-gu: I am pleased and honored to make this meaningful agreement, even if only through a screen. I hope to create a happy autonomous district together with Anyangcheon. Last year, Guro-gu promoted the Anyangcheon landmark project twice. We proceeded with the project aiming to create an 'Anyangcheon Arboretum' and are nearing completion. Thanks to many projects, Anyangcheon is visited not only by Guro-gu residents but also by people from neighboring districts and distant areas. It attracts many visitors throughout all four seasons.
Geumcheon, Guro, Yeongdeungpo, and Yangcheon are all connected by paths, so joint projects with themes like the 50-ri Cherry Blossom Road and 50-ri Rose Road will be possible. Environmental conservation groups can also unite. Various joint projects will be possible. I look forward to good things happening.
Thank you to each district for willingly responding and participating in this joint cooperation agreement proposal. Each district will work together to create a better Anyangcheon for residents. We will also jointly propose the Anyangcheon project to the government and Seoul city.
Thank you very much for joining us. I hope the 50-ri path of Anyangcheon will transform beautifully.
Yoo Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu: The Anyangcheon landmark project agreement was proposed by the Mayor of Guro-gu and agreed upon by all district mayors. When I was young, Anyangcheon was a polluted stream, but it has improved a lot recently, and many residents use it.
In the era of COVID-19, residents' desire and demand for green spaces have increased. I hope Anyangcheon will be an opportunity to overcome COVID-19.
I hope Anyangcheon becomes a landmark and more residents use it. I will actively participate in the joint development project of Anyangcheon and securing external support (government, Seoul city, etc.).
Kim Soo-young, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu: Last year and now during COVID-19, many residents are seeking outdoor spaces. Anyangcheon serves as a resting place for residents. Yangcheon-gu expanded the sidewalks last year. Many visitors, including cyclists, come from other areas.
I often take walks in neighboring districts like Guro and Yeongdeungpo and compare them with Yangcheon-gu. I thought it would be good to participate in the project together, and then the agreement proposal came.
This agreement will enable more systematic and efficient management of Anyangcheon. We can make Anyangcheon a more beautiful space. We can also secure budgets together.
We will work together to make Anyangcheon a better space.
Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu: I am glad that the southwestern districts have gathered to sign this important agreement. I was surprised when I visited Anyangcheon in Guro-gu last year. The four districts working together as an extension of the Anyangcheon landmark project will make it even better. Yeongdeungpo-gu also created a comprehensive sports belt last year.
After COVID-19, residents' desire for healing, green spaces, and cultural spaces has increased. We will work together to make Anyangcheon a healing space where culture, ecology, and sports can be enjoyed together.
We will do our best for the ecological restoration and landmark project of Anyangcheon.
□ Conversation after signing the agreement
Kim Soo-young, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu: This year, Yangcheon-gu will hold the Seoul Urban Agriculture Expo at Anyangcheon, and I would like to invite the mayors of each district.
Lee Seong, Mayor of Guro-gu: Anyangcheon was flooded nine times last year. It was submerged to the point that only the signposts were barely visible. However, most of the roses planted in Anyangcheon survived. Among some herbaceous plants other than roses, some were vulnerable to water, but the total loss was less than 5%.
Each district does not need to be too afraid of the gardens created along Anyangcheon being flooded. If you plant mainly water-resistant species, damage can be minimized.
