On this day, Gwangju held the first session of the Gwangju-type 3 Major New Deals Grand Lecture by inviting National Assembly member Kim Seong-hwan (Democratic Party of Korea) as a guest speaker.
Assemblyman Kim Seong-hwan is the executive chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea's 2050 Carbon Neutrality Special Committee, leading various research groups and committees in the National Assembly to respond to the climate crisis and promote the Green New Deal, spearheading practical Green New Deal policies.
In his lecture, Assemblyman Kim said, "If the current trend continues, the Earth's temperature will rise by 4 to 5℃ around 2050," and argued, "We must recognize this not as mere climate change but as a climate crisis emergency and seek a great civilizational transition to protect the Earth through the implementation of Green New Deal policies such as the decarbonized green revolution."
He also emphasized, "For this, a civilizational change from the carbon-based industrial revolution to the decarbonized green revolution, and from coal and oil bases to renewable energy and green hydrogen is necessary, and the Earth's temperature rise must be limited to 1.5℃ through 2050 carbon neutrality."
In particular, he evaluated, "For such a civilizational great transition, the role of local governments is important, and Gwangju has already taken a step ahead by launching the '2045 Carbon Neutral Gwangju Declaration,' signaling the start of overcoming the climate and environmental crisis from Gwangju."
As tasks for the Green New Deal to realize carbon neutrality, Assemblyman Kim proposed ▲ Power: significant expansion of renewable energy, realization of a distributed energy system and energy decentralization ▲ Transportation: achieving 100% future vehicles in new car sales by 2040, zero greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector by 2050 ▲ Buildings: activation of zero-energy building for new buildings, strengthening green remodeling for existing buildings ▲ Industry: smart green industrial complexes and energy efficiency ▲ Agriculture and livestock: eco-friendly agriculture and waste management ▲ Environment: resource circulation economy and ecological restoration ▲ Finance: establishment of green finance.
Before Assemblyman Kim Seong-hwan's lecture, Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-seop said in his greeting, "The world is now at the point where the 4th Industrial Revolution is in full swing, and COVID-19 has shaken the entire world, completely changing the economic and social systems and human daily life," introducing, "The Korean New Deal is a new national innovation strategy to turn this crisis into an opportunity."
He continued, "This grand lecture aims to inform citizens about the three major New Deals promoted by Gwangju under the recognition that 'success cannot be achieved without citizens' cooperation,' to seek active cooperation from citizens, and to spread the Gwangju-type 3 Major New Deals, which are ahead of the times, nationwide to support the success of the Korean New Deal."
Meanwhile, considering the severe spread of COVID-19, the grand lecture will be conducted entirely online without face-to-face meetings, live-streamed through Gwangju City's YouTube channel 'Hello Gwangju' and the grand lecture website, and will be broadcast as a recorded program on KBC Gwangju Broadcasting.
