Global COVID-19 Cases Surpass 90 Million... Death Toll Nears 2 Million

[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] According to the statistics site Worldometer, which tracks confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in real time, as of the 10th (Korean time), the total number of confirmed cases worldwide has reached 90,084,527. After surpassing 80 million on the 26th of last month, the number increased by 10 million in just fifteen days. In many regions of the Northern Hemisphere, where it is winter, infections are spreading rapidly. The cumulative death toll is also approaching 2 million.
As of 2 p.m. on the same day, according to the site’s tally of each country’s status, the country with the highest cumulative confirmed cases is the United States, with 22,699,938 cases. More than 380,000 people have lost their lives. The U.S. is considered the hardest-hit country, with 68,368 confirmed cases and 1,149 deaths per 1 million population.
Although the spread has somewhat slowed compared to last autumn, India has also surpassed 10 million confirmed cases. The cumulative number of patients is 10,451,346, with over 150,000 deaths. Brazil (8,075,998), Russia (3,379,103), and the United Kingdom (3,017,409) follow in cumulative confirmed cases. The total number of deaths worldwide is recorded at 1,934,925.
Earlier, after the cumulative confirmed cases exceeded 70 million on the 9th of last month, the number increased by 10 million in 16 days, surpassing 80 million. Since then, it has increased by another 10 million in fifteen days. Some countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States, have started COVID-19 vaccination, but it is expected to take several months to achieve herd immunity to curb the virus’s spread. Therefore, countries are implementing stringent lockdown measures.
