'People's Car' Hyundai Grandeur Surpasses 2 Million Units Sold Domestically
[Asia Economy Reporter Woo Su-yeon] Hyundai Motor's large sedan Grandeur has surpassed 2 million cumulative domestic sales 35 years after its launch. Once known as the 'symbol of success,' the Grandeur recently succeeded in transforming its image into a 'national car,' ranking as the best-selling car in Korea for four consecutive years.
According to Hyundai Motor on the 10th, a total of 2,000,573 units of the Grandeur were sold in the domestic market until December last year. This achievement was reached in 34 years since its first launch in 1986, through six generations of model changes until 2020.
At its initial launch, the Grandeur was introduced as a premium sedan emphasizing a luxurious image, known as the 'symbol of success.' Recently, with the growth of national income and the launch of Hyundai's premium brand Genesis, the status of the Grandeur has shifted from a 'boss's car' to a 'national car.'
Looking at sales by generation, the 1st generation (1986?1992) sold 92,571 units, the 2nd generation New Grandeur (1992?1999) 164,927 units, the 3rd generation Grandeur XG (1998?2005) 311,251 units, the 4th generation Grandeur TG (2005?2011) 406,798 units, the 5th generation Grandeur HG (2011?2017) 515,142 units, and the 6th generation Grandeur IG (2016?present) 509,884 units.
In particular, the 5th generation Grandeur HG model gained popularity in 2011, becoming the first large sedan to exceed 100,000 units in annual sales. From the Grandeur IG launched at the end of 2016, a more popularized image was added, consistently achieving annual sales of 100,000 units.
The Grandeur IG set a new record for the highest annual sales last year in the domestic market with 145,463 units sold. As a result, the Grandeur achieved first place in domestic sales for four consecutive years and maintained annual sales of over 100,000 units. Additionally, starting with the Grandeur IG model, hybrid models gained attention, leading the expansion of the domestic hybrid market. The 6th generation Grandeur hybrid sold 111,249 units over four years until last year, accounting for 21% of the 6th generation model's total sales.
