3.5km of Heated Roads in Seongbuk-gu... The Longest in Seoul Districts in 2020
Automatic Melting When It Snows to Prevent Road Freezing & Immediate Response to Heavy Snow... In 2020, Heated Roads in Seongbuk-gu Extended 3.5km
Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) installed an eco-friendly heating cable system on steep slopes in the area to create safe commuting and school routes during the winter season.
View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) has installed the largest number of 'eco-friendly heating cable systems' among Seoul's autonomous districts to prepare for traffic safety accidents during winter.
In December last year, installation work was completed at 11 hazardous locations during snowfall, including the steep school route at Sungin Elementary School.
The 'eco-friendly heating cable system' is structured so that heating cables embedded 7cm below the road surface operate autonomously through temperature and humidity sensors during winter snowfall.
On roads equipped with the automatic control system, snow accumulation can be prevented, and concerns about corrosion of road facilities and environmental pollution caused by de-icing agents are eliminated.
Seongbuk-gu is an area with many steep hills and slopes, where vehicle traffic becomes difficult during heavy snowfall, often causing challenges in snow removal operations.
Accordingly, starting with Seongbuk-ro 4-gil (Hanshin Hanjin Apartment passage) in 2016, the district added 11 more locations last year, completing the installation of eco-friendly heating cable systems at a total of 17 sites. By operating the heating cable system during the intensive snow removal period, rapid and efficient responses to heavy snowfall have become possible.
Using thermal imaging cameras on roads where the eco-friendly heating cable system is installed, the system's operation is being checked during sudden temperature drops.
In particular, this road heating cable installation project has attracted attention as a case where complaints raised by residents during the 'On-site Mayor's Office'?a key project of Seongbuk-gu's 7th elected term?were actively reflected and promptly resolved.
This year, the district plans to further expand the installation of road heating cable systems on slopes mainly used by vulnerable pedestrians such as the elderly and elementary school students, creating a safe and comfortable road environment even during winter snowfall.
Additionally, for vulnerable sections such as slopes without heating cable systems, the district official stated that frequent safety inspections and application of de-icing agents will be conducted according to snow removal measures to prevent traffic accidents on snowy roads during winter.
Seongbuk-gu Mayor Lee Seung-ro said, "To prevent loss of life and property damage caused by winter snowfall, we strengthened road traffic safety by installing eco-friendly heating cable systems last year," and added, "For sections without heating cables, we will ensure prompt snow removal so that residents can commute safely and comfortably during winter, making every effort to resolve inconveniences."
