Chungnam, Youth Population Declines for 3 Consecutive Years... Nearly 50% Single-Person Households
[Asia Economy (Hongseong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The youth population residing in Chungnam has been declining for three consecutive years. In particular, nearly half of the youth households in the region are single-person households.
Chungnam Province announced the "2020 Chungnam Youth Statistics," which includes this information, on the 6th. The youth statistics were compiled based on statistics and administrative data created by government agencies such as Statistics Korea, and this is the second edition since it was first created in 2018.
The youth statistics were prepared by investigating the status of six sectors?population and households, housing, employment, startups, welfare, and health?of youths aged 15 to 39 residing in Chungnam as of November 2019.
The survey results showed that Chungnam's youth population steadily decreased from 720,829 (33.3% of the total population) in 2017 to 711,974 (32.9%) in 2018, and 706,145 (32.3%) in 2019.
Also, in 2019, the youth population residing in the region was counted as 642,208 Koreans (90.9%) and 63,937 foreigners (9.1%). Among the foreign youth population, Thai nationals were the largest group with 10,464 people, followed by Vietnamese with 9,994, Korean-Chinese with 6,674, Chinese with 5,591, Cambodians with 4,352, and others totaling 26,862.
In the region, the proportion of single-person households among youth households was found to be close to half. Among 202,578 youth households (general households), single-person households accounted for 47.6% (96,408 households).
This was followed by two-person households at 16.9% (34,159 households), three-person households at 16.1% (32,543 households), four-person households at 15.0% (30,401 households), and households with five or more persons at 4.5% (9,067 households).
By gender, single-person households accounted for 55.9% (35,267 households) for females and 43.8% (61,141 households) for males.
Among the youth population (642,208 Koreans), the homeownership rate was 14.4% (92,437 people). Among the types of housing they owned, apartments accounted for the largest share at 82.4%.
Meanwhile, as of last year, the number of employed youths was approximately 397,000 in the first half and 396,000 in the second half. The number of youth job seekers was 67,719 (including those under 15), of whom 57,440 (84.8%) expressed a desire to work in the region.
Last year, the total number of youth unemployment benefit recipients was 15,708, with an average benefit amount per person of 5,052,000 KRW, which is 1,199,000 KRW higher than in 2017.

An official from the province stated, "The statistical data will be used to understand the youth situation and to establish and implement policies for local youth in the future," adding, "The province will continue to produce and analyze local statistical data to improve the quality of life for local residents."
