People Power Party "Choo Mi-ae, Prosecutor's Office Reported... Allegations of Neglecting COVID-19 at Dongbu Detention Center"
"President Moon and Choo Mi-ae Jointly File Complaint Against Yoon Seok-yeol's Disciplinary Action"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Members of the People Power Party belonging to the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee announced on the 6th that they will file a complaint with the prosecution against Minister of Justice Choo Mi-ae and related personnel for professional negligence, gross negligence resulting in death or injury, and dereliction of duty in connection with the COVID-19 cluster infection incident at Seoul Eastern Detention Center.
They held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office on the same day, stating, "Due to the failure to properly manage the isolation and confinement of COVID-19 infected individuals at Seoul Eastern Detention Center under the Ministry of Justice, the rights and lives of detainees were not adequately protected, resulting in one death and 1,085 infections as of the 5th," and made these remarks.
They questioned, "When confirmed cases appeared at the Shincheonji Church in Daegu, Minister Choo criticized the prosecution for delayed raids, so what role was she playing and where was she?" They pointed out, "Minister Choo visited Seoul Eastern Detention Center only on December 29, when the number of confirmed cases exceeded 700, which was 32 days after the first confirmed case. Until the day before, she was preoccupied with targeting Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol, posting on social media a ruling party lawmaker's statement that 'Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol must be impeached.'"
They emphasized, "No matter how much they are inmates in prison, should they be denied life and even the minimum human rights? Through this complaint against Minister Choo, we hope to clearly reveal how COVID-19 prevention and response for detainees were handled," and stressed, "Even if it is just one citizen, regardless of their situation or location, the life, safety, and human rights of the people must be thoroughly protected."

They added, "We also plan to file a complaint with the prosecution regarding the abuse of authority related to President Moon Jae-in and Minister Choo's disciplinary actions against Prosecutor General Yoon," and said, "As citizens of the Republic of Korea, we ask the prosecution to conduct a thorough investigation so that at least the minimum human rights are guaranteed and substantive rule of law, not arbitrary law enforcement, can be established."
