Gangdong-gu, Subway Line 9 Extension Confirmed (Gangdong~Hanam~Namyangju)
Extension Project of Line 9 (Seoul Gangdong~Hanam~Namyangju) Confirmed... Included in 2021 Master Plan, Basic Plan Started, Construction in 2024, Completion Targeted for 2028
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) announced that the 'Seoul Gangdong~Hanam~Namyangju Urban Railway Construction' project has been confirmed as part of the Namyangju Wangsuk New Town Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Plan, signaling a green light for the additional extension project of Line 9.
On December 29 last year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport finalized the metropolitan transportation improvement plans for the 3rd phase new towns, Namyangju Wangsuk District and Goyang Changneung District.
Among these, the Seoul Gangdong~Hanam~Namyangju urban railway construction project included in the Wangsuk District metropolitan transportation improvement plan is being promoted with the goal of reflecting it in the upper-level plan and starting the basic plan in 2021, commencing construction in 2024, and completing it in 2028.
The long-awaited Line 9 Phase 4 extension project for Gangdong residents is currently underway with the bidding process for selecting a turnkey contractor for Phase 4 (Jungang Veterans Hospital Station~Godeok Gangil 1 District, 4.12 km) and the additional extension of Phase 4 (Godeok Gangil 1 District~Gangil-dong, 1.25 km) connecting the disconnected section in Gangil-dong.
In June last year, Gangdong-gu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for cooperation on the urban railway extension project with Hanam City, Namyangju City, and Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH), promising mutual cooperation for the successful and practical promotion of the urban railway extension project connecting Gangdong-gu Godeok Gangil 1 District~Hanam Misa~Namyangju Wangsuk. The Ministry of Land’s metropolitan transportation improvement plan is seen as the fruit of these efforts.
Additionally, the Wangsuk District metropolitan transportation improvement plan includes projects such as constructing a new Han River bridge to disperse road traffic demand, expanding Olympic-daero (Gangil IC~Seondong IC, Amsa IC~Gangdong IC), and opening a bypass road at Gangil IC, which will greatly improve the road traffic environment in the Gangdong-gu area.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, “If Line 9 is extended through Hanam to Namyangju, Gangdong-gu is expected to truly become a key city in the eastern metropolitan area.” He added, “We will work closely with the Ministry of Land, Seoul City, Namyangju City, Hanam City, and LH to ensure the project is promoted promptly and will do our best.”
