View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Geochang-gun live-streamed the first sunrise of the New Year 2021, the Year of the Ox (辛丑年), through the official Geochang-gun YouTube channel.
This YouTube live broadcast was conducted to ease the disappointment caused by the cancellation of the annual Gamaksan Sunrise Festival and the closure of nationwide sunrise viewing spots due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was meaningful as it was live-streamed from Geochang Elevator Tower, a landmark of the county.
The first sunrise of the Year of the Ox (辛丑年) appeared around 7:45 a.m. on January 1st, showing a red glow as if encouraging everyone with New Year's wishes.
Residents expressed that it was good to safely make their New Year's hopes and goals while watching YouTube with their families in the warmth of their homes.
Gu In-mo, the mayor of Geochang-gun, said, “Although we cannot watch the sunrise at Gamaksan in Geochang due to COVID-19, it was a good time to look at the sunrise and make big dreams and wishes for the New Year through online YouTube.” He added, “I hope that in 2021, we can take off our masks and return to our precious daily lives.”

The Geochang Elevator Tower, completed in 2014, is a 102-meter (34-story) test tower operated by the Elevator Safety Technology Institute for elevator safety certification tests. The county is evolving into a global elevator city by promoting the World Elevator Hub City project worth 24.1 billion KRW and constructing a second tower of 125 meters with a project cost of 13 billion KRW.
