KAIST Professor Emeritus Seong Poonghyun Elected Chair of the International Nuclear Societies Council
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] KAIST announced on the 3rd that Professor Emeritus Seong Pung-hyun of the Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering at the university has been elected as the chairperson of the International Nuclear Societies Council.
The council is an international forum established in 1990. Currently, it is operated with the participation of the International Nuclear Women’s Organization and nuclear societies from 38 countries worldwide.
Professor Emeritus Seong was elected as the 16th chairperson of the council, with a term starting from the 1st of this month and lasting for two years.
Professor Emeritus Seong, who served as a KAIST professor from September 1991 to August 2020, held positions such as president of the Korean Nuclear Society, member of the Nuclear Safety Commission, and member of the Nuclear Promotion Commission during his tenure.

Meanwhile, Professor Emeritus Seong is a fellow member of the American Nuclear Society and currently serves as co-representative of the Professors’ Council pursuing rationalization of energy policy in Korea. He voices concerns about the government’s nuclear phase-out policy and advocates for the establishment of reasonable national energy policies.
