South Korea's National Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target Submitted to the UNFCCC Secretariat
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of Foreign Affairs submitted the '2030 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)' and the '2050 Long-term Low Carbon Development Strategy (LEDS)' under the Paris Agreement on climate change to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat on the 30th, acting as the National Focal Point for the UNFCCC.
The Nationally Determined Contribution and the Long-term Low Carbon Development Strategy are the English versions finalized after review by relevant ministries, following the confirmation of the Korean versions at the Cabinet meeting on the 15th, for submission to the UNFCCC Secretariat.
The Nationally Determined Contribution includes the greenhouse gas reduction targets pledged to the international community to be achieved by 2030, presenting a 24.4% reduction compared to 2017 emissions as South Korea's 2030 national greenhouse gas reduction target.
Additionally, the Long-term Low Carbon Development Strategy outlines the country's long-term vision and national strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The government stated, "Achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 is a task that must be pursued vigorously with a consistent direction, looking ahead 30 years," adding, "After submitting the LEDS, we will establish strong governance, including the presidential '2050 Carbon Neutrality Committee,' to systematically implement the 2050 carbon neutrality and progressively establish tasks for carbon neutrality implementation."
