Chonnam National University Hospital Achieves Remarkable Results in Open Laboratory This Year
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] Jeonnam National University Hospital, the only national university hospital in the country promoting the Open Laboratory project, is showing remarkable results such as winning government projects and increasing sales of resident companies.
According to Jeonnam National University Hospital on the 31st, the Open Laboratory is a platform that supports the development of new technologies and new products in the health and medical field through collaboration such as joint research between hospitals and startup companies.
Selected as a project institution last year, Jeonnam National University Hospital selected 23 startup companies as Open Laboratory target companies and supports them with various programs such as matching and consulting with professional clinicians, residency services, prototype production, clinical trial protocol development, and technology business and partnering linked to medical societies.
The most outstanding achievement of the Open Laboratory this year was winning government projects.
Startup companies supported by clinicians applied for 19 government projects and won 15, nearly 80%, with the total winning amount reaching about 3.2 billion KRW.
The hospital explained that this achievement was greatly supported by selecting and supporting 11 team projects between clinicians and startup companies to activate joint research between clinicians and companies.
The sales of resident companies in the Open Laboratory increased by 2.8 billion KRW compared to the previous year, and as a result, about 60 new employees were hired.
Matching consulting with clinicians also recorded 181 cases, a 62% increase compared to last year, and 10 types of Open Laboratory equipment were added, building a total of 45 types. Support was also provided for health and medical industry-academia-research-hospital (linked with medical societies) technology business partnering and promotional booths, injecting vitality into project promotion.
In addition, satisfactory results were shown in prototype production support (13 cases), domestic and international patent applications (7 cases), patent registrations (4 cases), product launches (2 cases), technology transfers (4 cases), non-clinical trials (20 cases), clinical trial protocol development (4 cases), clinical trials (1 case), patent consulting (18 cases), and expert consulting (37 cases).
Among resident companies, Phil Cosmetic Korea Co., Ltd. entered three types of hand sanitizers, leading K-quarantine amid the spread of COVID-19, into Amazon, and All That Nature Co., Ltd. obtained certification for two types of functional cosmetics in Russia, opening export routes.
Neurogen Co., Ltd. is proceeding with the clinical trial approval process from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for NeuroAI, an AI-based dementia diagnosis support medical device.
With these achievements, Jeonnam National University Hospital plans to select more than four additional companies early next year to support joint research and development and product commercialization linked with clinicians.
