[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] KCC has completed the 'Public-type Regional Childcare Center Construction Project,' which it participated in to eliminate blind spots in child care, resulting in the opening of regional childcare centers in Okcheon-gun, Chungbuk; Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongbuk; and Haman-gun, Gyeongnam.
Since last year, KCC has participated in the public-type regional childcare center construction project promoted by international relief and development NGO Good Neighbors, supporting various construction materials necessary for the construction. As a result, three public-type regional childcare centers have opened: in Okcheon-gun, Chungbuk in June, Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongbuk in July, and Haman-gun, Gyeongnam in November.
Most residents in these areas engage in agriculture, and the regions are ultra-aged with a high proportion of elderly population over 65 years old. Meanwhile, facilities available for children to use after school are severely lacking, making child protection facilities urgently needed. In response, KCC and several other companies and institutions joined forces to provide a reliable haven where children can be safely entrusted.
KCC provided its construction materials such as high-insulation windows, gypsum boards, thermal insulation materials, and paint for this project. Since indoor spaces are where young children spend a lot of time, KCC created a safe environment using its eco-friendly and high-efficiency materials.
The windows supported by KCC hold Passive House (PH) certification for high insulation performance and are 'Energy Consumption Efficiency Grade 1' products that help save heating and cooling costs. Other materials are also representative eco-friendly products holding the highest grade of the HB (Healthy Building Materials) mark certified by the Korea Air Cleaning Association and the Environmental Mark certified by the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute under the Ministry of Environment.
Through the construction of these public-type regional childcare centers, KCC expects to meet the demands of parents by providing safe and nature-friendly care and play spaces for children in marginalized rural areas, as well as greatly contributing to the emotional development of the children.
Each regional childcare center plans to offer participatory local welfare services that go beyond the concept of child-use facilities, involving local residents directly in creating a child protection system for the community. In particular, various after-school programs will be operated to ensure children receive appropriate care, allowing parents to safely entrust their children during busy farming seasons when labor is short.
