As Prices Fall... Garlic Cultivation Area Expected to Decrease by Up to 16% Next Year
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] The cultivation area of garlic, whose price fell this year, is expected to decrease significantly next year.
According to the "2021 Garlic and Onion Expected Cultivation Area Results" announced by Statistics Korea on the 29th, the garlic cultivation area next year is expected to be 21,374 to 22,882 hectares, a decrease of 9.8 to 15.8% compared to this year (25,372 hectares).
If the maximum decrease of 15.8% materializes, the garlic cultivation area will record the largest decline since 2015 (-17.7%). Statistics Korea explained, "Due to factors such as this year's price drop, the garlic cultivation area for next year is expected to decrease."
On the other hand, onions, whose prices have recently risen, are expected to have a cultivation area of 18,258 to 19,818 hectares next year, an increase of 24.4 to 35.1% compared to the previous year (14,673 hectares). The increase in onion cultivation area next year will be the largest since 2018 (35.2%).

Meanwhile, the expected cultivation area was announced based on a sample survey as of November this year to stabilize the supply and demand of garlic and onions.
