Extension of Line 9 to Namyangju Visualized... Included in Wangsuk Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Plan
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] The Seoul Subway Line 9, currently undergoing a phase 4 extension from Jungang Veterans Hospital Station to Godeok, will be further extended through Hanam City in Gyeonggi Province to Namyangju City.
Jin Sun-mi, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea and chairperson of the National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee (representing Gangdong-gap, Seoul), announced on the 29th that the Line 9 extension project connecting Gangil-dong in Gangdong-gu to Wangsu New Town in Namyangju is being promoted with a target opening in 2028.
According to Rep. Jin, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport recently finalized a metropolitan transportation improvement plan, which includes the Line 9 extension project, through transportation expert agency services, verification by the Korea Transport Institute, consultations with local governments, and review by the Metropolitan Area Transport Committee, as a measure to improve traffic in response to new town developments and changes in metropolitan traffic volume.
This metropolitan transportation improvement plan focuses on traffic measures for Wangsu New Town in Namyangju and Changneung New Town in Goyang, confirming 34 projects including not only the Line 9 extension but also the construction of new Han River bridges, expansion of Olympic-daero and Gangbyeonbuk-ro, and the establishment of the Goyang-Eunpyeong urban railway (Goyang Line). The Ministry of Land plans to invest approximately 4.5 trillion KRW to implement these projects.
Accordingly, the Line 9 extension project to Namyangju aims for completion in 2028, with plans to reflect it in higher-level plans and start basic planning next year, followed by construction commencement in 2024. The project budget is about 1.5 trillion KRW.
Currently, Gangdong-gu in Seoul is experiencing rapid population inflow due to large-scale reconstruction of existing Godeok Jugong Apartments and the development of the Godeok-Gangil public housing district, raising concerns about traffic congestion. However, after adopting a turnkey method for the phase 4 extension of Line 9 (Jungang Veterans Hospital Station to Godeok) in July, advancing the opening to 2027, and including an additional Line 9 extension in the metropolitan transportation improvement plan, many of these concerns are expected to be alleviated.
